Dear Sydney:

Might I ask why we were not consulted with this article?  We are the people who started this whole debate in the first place is why I ask.

Back in the 1970’s and 1980’s, we were viewed only and solely as either sexual deviants, drug addicts, or criminals.  I know because those were the only categories first of all where I could find research on prostitution.  There wasn’t even a category at the UCLA medical research library for the subject – only drug addiction, sexual abnormality, and criminal behavior.   There certainly wasn’t even the idea someone could be “addicted” to the sex industry in the same manner as someone was addicted to drugs being that back then there wasn’t even the concept of sexual addiction, gambling addiction, shopping addiction, etc., because the ONLY thing classified as an addiction back then was drug and alcohol abuse.

Why?  Because as a disease, then health insurance would pay for their treatment.   Therefore, they were classified as a disease so treatment was paid for.  To be classified as an “addiction”, meant only was something a disease for which treatment would pay for the person suffering from it to get help – but the courts had to take a different view on their “criminal” behavior.

Thus why we had drug and alcohol courts, but no courts separate for prostitution.  Prostitutes were treated by the courts on the same level as murderers, not rapist’s however.  Because rape was just about then getting the classification of a mental disorder, even part of sexual addiction.  Meaning that some rapists even were able to get out of jail time for their crimes if they agreed to get counseling.

Same for domestic violence.  Men who were beating their wives were getting psychiatrists to agree to put them into treatment instead of jail for “their issues to get help”.

However, I was watching as the cops would go into massage parlors and arrest every woman in the place as a “criminal”.  When some of those women would say they had been sold into being there, or their pimp was threatening to murder their mother or children if they didn’t go to work in that place – they were laughed at.

At the same time, I was witnessing women being sold during Iran Contra through the cover of the “Dating Game”.  I was watching escorts being recruited to appear on the show because many didn’t have family to ask questions.  Tapes were being made of them and sent overseas to wealthy business men we were making oil deals with, or cocaine deals with like Pablo or Noriega, and they’d be picked.  They’re be then put on the show and “win” a date.  They’re get their passports in order and willingly walk onto the plane with Chuck Barris as their chaperone. Now this was clearly years before Iran Contra came out and years before Chuck confessed to being a CIA “hit man”.   In the film Confessions of a Dangerous Mind – you see the woman disappearing into this other country with the poor man being none the wiser what was going on.   Most of those women on those dates never came home.  When one would go to the police you’d hear “they got on the plane willingly therefore no kidnapping and no crime”.  Without the charge of  a crime – there was no investigation.

So where do we go to tell this to?  The police?  The Beverly Hills Police in the 1980’s were also owners of the escort service Talk of the Town who would serve wealthy celebrities, oil royalty, and foreign politicians.  Alex Adams was their madam who was also using her position with these men to be an informant for the FBI and CIA.

You either worked through Alex or these cops or if you walked into the Beverly Hilton Hotel, or other hotels they had security with, you’d be drug into a basement security office, raped, beat up, roughed up, and told not to come back ever.  If your pimp tried to come save you from this – he was arrested as your pimp. You were then photographed and your picture given to every other hotel they owned and banned.  The rooms of the hotels were bugged and when the johns would order an escort – that’s how they knew who to stop when she arrived, drag her to this basement office, and do their routine.  Then they’d send “their” girls to the client with him none the wiser.  They also would sell the drugs they brought in on the boats during Iran Contra to the clients with the prostitutes being the one to carry and sell the drugs so if anything went wrong – they’d take the fall.  Sometimes they’d even set up the guy for blackmail, or pump him for information they needed for the CIA’s purposes.

Now where are you going to go and who are you going to tell when this is happening to you?  The police?  Either they’d lock you up as nuts or arrest you to silence you or worse.  Remember, we were either just sexual deviants, drug addicts or criminals.

I didn’t think it was right to see a rapist or wife beater getting out of jail while we were going constantly.  We would then lose our homes, our property, and our children.  So what was I going to do about it?

I launched the hotline in 1987 for Prostitutes Anonymous, and I launched the first 12 step program.  With that 12 step program I went to the city of Los Angeles and I said that with this program we could now offer “alternatives to incarceration” for those found guilty, as well as diversion instead of jail.

In order to push for decriminalization it was our program who put forth if some of us were being forced to be engaging in these criminal acts – how were we ever going to get a proper legal defense of our crime, as well as prosecute our pimps and trafficker if witnesses were afraid to come forward to defend us because they would incriminate themselves in the process?  My logic I posed to the system was if they wanted to truly prosecute these pimps – then they had to decriminalize prostitution.

Now the system didn’t believe we were ever forced.  So to prove we were to them, I started coming forward with victims of forced prostitution on talk shows, news shows, and other public events along with explaining why we had to decriminalize prostitution in order to put the “real” criminals behind bars.

Just as Patty Hearst was given a pardon for being a bank robber based on being brainwashed by her captors I also argued that if we were being brainwashed and forced – should we also be pardoned?  This allowed us to go in and expunge prostitution records on some of our members also for the first time.  You can read about all of this at www.hightechmadam.com

Now in 2007, we gave a press conference that sex trafficking does exist within the legal brothels of Nevada, the legal strip clubs,  porn sets, and massage parlors.  We were pointing out that trafficking does not only exist on street corners as we’ve been seeing the police only focus in on.   We were calling out for there to be a special program, NCAST, created to go in and investigate sex trafficking within the legal sex industry.

However, Sheldon Adelon not only funds drug treatment in the USA, but he also wants prostitution legalized.  So when we said legal prostitution in Nevada had sex trafficking happening within it while the owners were doing nothing.  Nor were the task forces, and we weren’t able to call the National Trafficking Hotline for help because they were only helping those who were being arrested for prostitution who could prosecute their pimp – we had a problem.

Because right now you wont’ get help within the trafficking network unless you’re prosecuted first as a prostitute yourself, and then you turn the case onto your pimp.  If you aren’t prosecuting anyone – they won’t help you – thus why we called the press conference.   What they were doing was giving total amnesty and immunity to any pimp who could drive his victim to Nevada and get her a brothel license such as in Aubrey’s case.  www.blogtalkradio.com/stopsextrafficktalk/2013/07/08/hear-from-a-nevada-brothel-prostitute

When we gave this conference, Sheldon Adelson who published the Review Journal heard what we were saying about legalized prostitution.  Now what we were saying gives grounds to some kind of oversight, or even a union being created to protect legal prostitutes, strippers, and porn performers.   He has an agenda to get prostitution legalized through the USA and into China where he owns a casino there also.   He also wanted me to stop saying to women in drug treatment they had to quit prostitution in order to stay clean long term because he’s got women working for him he doesn’t want to see retire yet.

What he does is send in Abigail Goldman to tell me he’s declared a “media blacklist” of my name, and of Sex Workers Anonymous’ name “no matter how many men and women die because of not hearing about your program”.  Which by the way, you might note Polaris has enforced the sign requirement in just about every state BUT Nevada where the legal brothels not only exist but if I wanted to get help out there to victims why would I only focus on areas where it’s illegal and not any on where it’s legal?

Add that onto our battle with the Catholic Church that threw their hat into the ring in 2003 and you have a lot of people who suddenly don't remember our name anymore.  What I mean by that is in 2002 when Polaris opened their trafficking hotline Sydney, our program had a meeting in every major city of the USA.  We were getting referrals from the courts to send women convicted of prostitution to our meetings instead of jail.  This way they were able to not only stay free, but get jobs which paid taxes to Uncle Sam, they could enter drug treatment if they wanted, and they could most important keep their kids instead of them going into foster care.  Because our statistics were showing the average sex worker/prostitute also had at least two or more children of school age.  This meant putting them in jail was like putting Amber Batts in Alaska in jail - it meant her two kids went to foster care which was the real crime here.

The Catholic Church however wanted control over these women we were working with.  Our meetings were being held in every Salvation Army or Catholic Charity because they'd allow us to meet there.  No one else would because prostitution you see is illegal everywhere but a few counties in Nevada, and Rhode Island before Polaris got ahold of them.   Meaning a meeting of us is technically a meeting of criminals.  So no one but them would give us meeting space.

So in 2002, Polaris launched the hotline to ask not for sex workers to call for help, not for prostitutes who needed help to call, but for those people being trafficked to call for help.  In 2003, Bush and Randall Tobias put all the money our group spent 13 years lobbying and pushing for us to receive under victim services we had been denied because we were "criminals" previously, under the control of ONLY "faith based" programs.  Of which we as a 12 step program are not.

So the Catholic Church steps in and every Salvation Army and Catholic Charity in the USA told us to get our meeting and our members off their property.  They fired all of our members who had been doing outreach and work with prostitutes.  Then they applied for grants and got case management money not to work with "prostitutes" any longer - but TRAFFICKING VICTIMS only.   Old school was out, new school in.  Prostitutes out, trafficking victims and programs in.

Now we had prostitutes being told you are either a "trafficking victim" or you don't get help and you don't exist.  Also, they were being given housing in these shelters, and alternative sentencing, but not allowed to see doctors nor therapists.  Certainly not us.  Why?  Because these women might hear the word "abortion" for one thing.  For another, shelter workers were telling us that they were housed in trafficking safe houses by day.

But at night they were being picked up by pimps to go to work at local strip clubs, massage parlors, and even porn shoots. Why?  Because sex work is legal and prostitution illegal - but they could do "legal" work.  To us that was like telling an addict you can stop using street drugs, but it's okay to take any drug a doctor gives you.   We know it's not that simple.  Just as an addict knows a prescribed legal drug doesn't mean taking it isn't a relapse for them - we in Sex Workers Anonymous know we must abstain from all forms of sex work in order to recover.   Now am I saying "all sex workers"?  No.  I'm saying OUR MEMBERS.   Just as AA doesn't call for Prohibition - but only for total abstinence from all forms of alcohol for their members also to define sobriety.

To fight the fact we were now being put into competition with the Catholic Church and the government for our own members, I couldn't find a lawyer who wanted to sue the church on our behalf with no monetary judgment possible, but I was able to find some ACLU lawyers who won the ACLU vs. Catholic Bishops lawsuit.   Meaning they had to stop using money to control these women and block them from proper treatment.

But they continued to block them from anyone who wasn't condemning prostitution and pornography.  Again, we have "no opinion on outside issues".  This was like telling AA they could not have access to the alcoholic unless they joined a team to bring back Prohibition.  We can't do that.  Then we saw a Supreme Court case grant the government could not restrict money to only go to programs that only believed one thing.

Now was this about us getting money?  No - it was about other people wanting money who would not partner or work with any group that might cost them that grant.  Thus we were being excluded from our own field in what's called a "natural monopoly".   If everyone in the field is worried about their job or their grant money by only wanting to work with people who aren't going to cost them that money or job - then you are creating essentially a "monopoly" which by the way is the next lawsuit to come down the way in this movement.

Because we can't get the word out that we've made these wins to get back access to our own members.  Why?  Because the same groups controlling the money in this field right now are also connected to the media, and even the legal brothels of Nevada, that's why.    Essentially, we've been able to put together that Polaris has created what's called a "natural monopoly" on the field which has been shutting our program, and our members, out.

Meaning this might be why not one article has been published with our name in it on this subject since 2007.  Even though the author of the Trafficking Act of 2000 has said in another interview that the “movement has been hijacked by money interests”.  Well with us out of the picture – yes the movement has been hijacked.

Now Sydney – let me ask you something.  Have you ever been to an AA meeting?  Especially one where the alcoholics were court ordered there?  Let me ask you if you’ve seen how many readily easily totally admit they’re an alcoholic in their first ever AA meeting?   Have you ever heard someone say they “couldn’t admit they were an alcoholic until they tried to stop drinking?”  I mean how would you know if you’re an alcoholic if you’ve never tried to stop drinking?

So I ask you – is Mary in Seattle who is still in active sex work really in any position to judge whether she’s being forced or not forced while still in the sex industry?

Another point is that if Samoly Mam can lie about being a survivor, then isn’t it possible that someone could lie about being a “voluntary sex worker”?

That if these people could lie about being a “trafficking victim”  http://reason.com/blog/2016/03/04/the-somali-sex-slave-ring-that-wasnt in order to get some press for their career and some of the trafficking money – then is it possible that someone might be paying Mary to spout off certain views?  What - the tobacco industry didn't hire their shills to claim their product "wasn't addictive" and "didn't cause cancer"?  Sydney it doesn't work both ways.  You can't claim that sex work is in fact "work" and an "industry" and then turn around and deny it doesn't operate just like any other BILLION DOLLAR BUSINESS WHICH IS LIE.   It's called MARKETING.

Do you really think the tobacco industry told the truth when they spoke to Congress about their product while they were selling tobacco?   http://www.nytimes.com/1994/04/15/us/tobacco-chiefs-say-cigarettes-aren-t-addictive.html?pagewanted=all

By the way, did you know the guy who tried to come forward with proof the product was not only addictive, but that the company knew it was, couldn’t come forward in the press with the story?  The movie “Insider” with Al Pacino,  was all about the whole legal battle this guy, and a team of lawyers and reporters,  had to go through in order to tell the truth to the public.  The tobacco industry makes how much money now?   Kim’s made millions and the porn industry is making BILLIONS - http://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/2016/03/28/kim-kardashian-mom-pushed-sex-tape-release-book-says/ so don’t you think that’s why when Linda Lovelace tried to speak about being forced to film “Deep Throat” at gunpoint – the whole industry then tried to deny it was true?   That possibly this is why SOME PEOPLE ARE TRYING TO SHUT US UP ?

Again why?  To protect their income and jobs – as well as avoid legal prosecution – that’s why.  For marketing purposes - that's why.    You didn't watch Linda Lovelace get up in front of talk show audiences in 1980 Sydney but I did.  I remember when that film came out.  I remember the lines around the block to get into the first XXX film aired in a regular theater instead of some back alley dump.  I remember hearing my parents and their friends all talking about being the "hip crowd" that was "mature and hip enough" to go see a film like that in a theater together.  So I remember how popular the film was when it came out.

I also remember when Linda spoke about being beaten, raped, and forced at gunpoint to make that film the way the men in the audience REVOLTED.  They called her a "liar".  They "boo'd" at her.  They belittled her and attacked her say she was "just jealous of Marilyn Chambers" who was his new "protege" he'd taken on to start filming when Linda was telling us what happened to her.  To prove her story she pointed us to go back and look closely at the film again.  To go see the bruises on her legs in the bathtub suicide scene and also the pool scene.  Which of course the bruises are clearly visible in that film.

Now do you think the producers weren't worried about liability or even criminal charges?  Do you think Chuck wasn't worried about criminal charges or a civil lawsuit?  Actually they weren't because guess what?  The Trafficking Act of 2000 hadn't been written yet.

But I watched the mens' eyes in the audience at being confronted with the reality they had been getting off all this time to images of a woman being raped, trafficked, and abused.   Both men and women who had "enjoyed" that film were horrified at the realization they were watching commercialized rape of Linda.  Not all women in all porn.  I'm not saying all women in all porn.  I'm saying LINDA was being raped at gunpoint in that film.   People didn't want to hear it and they didn't want to believe it.   So they accused her of "making it up".  They accused of "trying to make a buck by selling a book" of the story which couldn't be told any way other than a book.

Then the anti-porn industry came in and tried to get Linda to be their poster child to do away with all porn as bad. While sex industry tried to deny there was any abuse going on at all anywhere in the opposite extreme.  Calling it "what two consenting adults do".  Only it's not what "two consenting adults do" the minute you slap a price tag on it.   I can give away food all I want out of my home kitchen - but the minute I slap a label on it and a price tag - it becomes a product.   As a product involving human labor there are certain laws and rules in this country that need to be respected and recognized including no worker should be forced to do said work at the threat of a gun.   And the people who get up and say that person has no gun are the people defending the gunman NOT the victim.

Which was COYOTE - Call Off Your Old Tired Ethics was created to speak out for the Linda's of the world.  Only Margo got tired and dumped it on St. James Infirmary and walked away from the arena.  We created our program.  After COYOTE retired, SWOP call out which is Sex Workers Outreach Project.  You know why  they were called "outreach project"?   Because like members of AA don't go into bars looking for new members, we don't hang around the sex industry while we're retired.  It's too easy to get sucked back into the game.

SWOP was one of the many sex worker rights groups that used to alert us when a sex worker was in trouble but they couldn't call the cops for help. Such as the recent news about two LAPD officers who rape a prostitute.    Then we'd be able to go in and help them.   Ever heard of Chris Butler?  He was a retired cop now turned private investigator slash brothel owner.  Try running from this guy when you don't want to prostitute anymore and give him a cut.  Try running from an ex-cop with cop buddies who are winning awards for drug busts.   Call the National Trafficking Hotline and they tell you to call either a homeless shelter or the cops.  Big help.

So we would get a call from SWOP saying someone needed help.  We could then, at her request, step in to get her out of the situation safely.  As it was, Chris didn't get stopped until one of his own male investigators stepped up to blow the whistle on him.   One of the ways word used to reach us about a sex worker in trouble was through a blog "Tits & Sass".  A blog where we could put out warnings also like when Melissa Farley was making up fake survivors to carry forward her agenda when we refused to lie for her.

Only like the man portrayed in the film "Insider", the tobacco industry lashed back to silence him from coming forward because there's millions of dollars at stake here.   There are people still today who were connected to Chris' operation who were we believe part of arrests in Operation Dollhouse, part of arrests in Wichita, and also part of these recent brave arrests in Seattle of the "League".  These are very powerful, very bad, very cocky, traffickers who would love to get someone like Mary from SWOP to stand up and say "oh no these women aren't being coerced".

So how do you tell if someone is telling the truth?  Who in this doesn’t have a dog in the fight?  I’m not making money in the sex industry.  I’m not trying to promote myself to clients, nor trying to recruit people to come patronize my brothel nor to fill up my appointment book or sell a tape.  I'm not being a paid "influencer" as they call them in the union busting field, nor online with marketing campaigns.   Where they do things like create fake reviews or fake articles to sell your product or services.   If X-Box could create fake players to create fake reviews just to sell some game stations do you honestly think the sex industry can't hire a few of their own "influencers"?  Give me a break.

I found in your article you said there wasn’t “any real data” only I didn’t hear my phone ring.  Polaris has answered only 100,000 phone calls whereas our hotline over 30 years has answered over 500,000 calls.  We have 190,000 members in our database, with meetings all over the USA, Canada, and in five other countries.  Our hotline takes calls from all over the world.   When Melissa Farley wanted to do her research on sex workers - she'd come to us prior to our fall out with her in 2007. Why?   We found she was lying.  When the facts weren’t fitting her agenda, and when we refused to lie for her, she started making things up that’s why.  That’s why I filed a complaint with the American Psychological Board about her and her research.

So I’ve love to talk to you about our case histories.  Before I even launched our program I spoke to 2,000 active sex workers and 2000 retired sex workers.   To write our Recovery Guide, I interviewed another 4,000 ex-sex workers.  I've been the one to answer our hotline most of the time since 2007.  So if you’d like to know something about our case histories - just give me a call.  Right now researchers, students and legislators all over the country call me for information on our members.   We are clean from drugs.  We are free of pimps.  We don't have "johns" we're not trying to hurt their feelings.  We aren't out there trying to fill up our appointment book.

Which by the way you know what Chuck used to tell Linda when he first turned her out into how to become "one of the great porn stars of all time"?  He trained her to "act like she loved it".  Go on - read the book.  In it she describes how Chuck told her to act like she was a complete nypho and there was truly nothing more in life she wanted to do than to screw some strange man for money.   Now Mary is an active sex worker.  Is she or is she not marketing her services in the same way Ben & Jerry's gets press on one of their new ice cream flavors to drive up sales?   Again, if this is an industry than look at it like one and Mary is trying to sell us something Sydney.     We however in SWA are not trying to sell anyone on anything but to tell our stories.

Now back to the "monopoly" discussion, we have uncovered enough proof now of what is a "natural monopoly" that's been created in this field by Polaris.  Who recently has partnered with Google and also Palatin, a CIA based company working for the government to analyze the data coming into the hotline.   Thus we are in the process of typing up a complaint to the DOJ Anti-Trust Division about this to see what can be done about breaking up this monopoly.

If you’d like to talk more on the subject, then I’d love to hear from you.  (702) 468-4529
